Summary

Wow! It’s hard to believe this is Julia Quinn’s first novel! It’s a fun read with a very smart, opinionated American redhead and a equally independent and traditional Duke。 A perfect match! Wonderful story and characters…a must read for any Julia Quinn fan!

I really emjoyed this read。 I loved a strong female lead and this book did that。 I also really liked how it was american girl in england。 I also loved all the side characters espeically emma cousin。 I also thought this book had a nice mystery at the end to keep me gusing and wanting to listen。 I thought this was a great read and one that i really enjoyed!

perfectly imperfect heroineLoved this book and the story line。 The humor, the wit and lit references were fantastic。 To think this was the first book of her career-it’s soooo good。

- 1。5 starsI feel very torn about this one because I don't know how to feel。 On one hand, I was interested in seeing how Emma and Alex's relationship was going to develop, but on the other hand, it took me eons to finish it。。。 I felt like I was reading a book of 800 pages。 😫 Maybe it was because the writing was。。。 weird? The constant change in POV confused me a lot, and every time they mentioned Emma's red hair, I got out of the story。 She had fiery red hair。 I got it。 I didn't need to be remind - 1。5 starsI feel very torn about this one because I don't know how to feel。 On one hand, I was interested in seeing how Emma and Alex's relationship was going to develop, but on the other hand, it took me eons to finish it。。。 I felt like I was reading a book of 800 pages。 😫 Maybe it was because the writing was。。。 weird? 5/5 Stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ This book was splendid! I’m impressed that this book was Julia’s debut novel published in the 90’s and still holds up to this day。 This book had some hilarious moments in it and the way they met was great。 The little moments and the chemistry between Emma and Alex seemed so genuine and was so sweet as well I really liked that aspect in the story the most。 One thing that annoyed me was Alex’s mistrust with women in general and how he reacted with Emma。 Another disappointi 5/5 Stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ This book was splendid! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Read this after reading her more recent works, and it is hard not to compare。 The author’s writing and voice has greatly improved since this novel, though I still appreciate this work。 A bit too much going back and forth over the duke is a jerk/the American is reckless and does he/she love me for my taste。 I also felt like there may have been less historical research completed for the period generally and verbiage used for the characters compared to her other books。

So good! This was Julia Quinn’s first book, written in 1995。 I was worried that some of the content would be outdated, but I don’t know why—Quinn was a young woman in the 90s, living through whatever nonsense young women faced then。 And, lord, did she write it well。 Set in the early 1800s, of course, but so relatable。She and her protagonist had all the energy a young author brings。 The plot and the energy were spot on。 People would have had to be blind not to see who Julia Quinn would become。

4 starsEmma and Lord Alexander。。。 can they really make it work? Loved the romance, humor and the challenges these two came across to make it work。。。

This is a top 3 book for me by Julia Quinn。 Right up there with Everything and the Moon and 10 Things I love about You

Sarah

DNF at 57% - Can’t believe I’m saying that about Julia Quinn, but this was her first book from 1995 and I could not stand the hero at all!! Also, hearing someone other than Rosalyn Landor narrate a JQ book just felt so wrong。

Elizabeth

It was good, and I really liked Emma and Alex。 But they were also too perfect, too nice。 I could have done with a little more dimension。

Audio re-read。 It's a bit bonkers but it's fun。 Not the best narrator, I wish they'd get RL to redo this。 Audio re-read。 It's a bit bonkers but it's fun。 Not the best narrator, I wish they'd get RL to redo this。 。。。more

Aliya

The first quarter of the book was dreadfully uninteresting, it did get slightly better after, although the plot was quite predictable and some what lacking creativity, not one of Julia's best novels。 The first quarter of the book was dreadfully uninteresting, it did get slightly better after, although the plot was quite predictable and some what lacking creativity, not one of Julia's best novels。 。。。more

DNFed 2%I know I barely gave this a chance, but when the writing doesn’t work for you right off the bat then there’s no point really。

Holly Ortega

Loved it!!!!The heroine Emma is very spunky。 She has great antics with her cousin Bella。

Heather Alderman

Good thing that Julia Quinn put an introduction in this book letting the reader know that this was her first novel that she wrote in college, otherwise, I would have been very confused by the writing - which was not so great。 Cute story idea, just hard to follow at times as the POV changes from line to line。

Jill

Didn’t like his aggressive rake-ish ways。

I find it infuriating that I'm supposed to go on a romantic adventure with a guy who I know is lecherous and takes advantage of women by chapter 2。 Gross。 DNF。 I find it infuriating that I'm supposed to go on a romantic adventure with a guy who I know is lecherous and takes advantage of women by chapter 2。 Gross。 DNF。 。。。more
